Work experience

Working as the main 3D Artist/Animator in a group of 3 to develop augmented reality apps for mobile devices as a proof of concept. I also have done a models of buildings and people that are being used for Holographic Projection Systems. As well as the apps and holograms, I also worked on a proof of concept animation for a medical company. This was using Phys X in 3ds Max for a device to help improve cancer detection. The aim of the video was to show people exactly how the device would work. With this position bring in an assortment of contracts I have worked with a wide range of different companies. These include NTI Leeds, Faraday knowledge, Arc Medical, Channel and the BBC.

  • Making 3d models of buildings and characters using reference and concept art to produce the end result models. This was done using Zbrush for the high poly modelling and then retoplogized in Topogun for UV mapping and animating in 3ds Max.

  • Animating the characters using the motion capture vicon system which was then brought into 3DS Max for key frame animating where needed.

  • Textures had to be made for the buildings I was making, so I used a high quality camera to take images and then make repeatable textures where needed to replicate the building. I then modelled and textured the inside of the building for the apps functionality that was asked of me. All textures were made using Photo shop CS5

  • Communicate with clients on specification they wanted for the projects I was working on. This was especially essential when I helped produce some models for a BBC documentary.

  • Making animated sprite sheets using Photo shop and posing using the cat rig from 3DS Max to create transitions between actions.

  • Researching the type of game and past styles and then creating a colour tray with colours that work together to get the overall appearance of the game to look good enough to present to the client.

I currently work at Wakefield College teaching games design as well as working on freelance contracts in between. There have been many benefits from my experience as a tutor, such as getting guidance from 4 other tutors who have worked in the game industry for upto 20 years each. This has helped me to keep all my work methods relevant and helped me progress my personal skills with 3D models and animation more effectively. My freelance work has also been a benefit with self development, trying new methods for modelling, texturing and even animations. Mixed in with the help I receieve from the veterans of the game industry I feel I am very confortable with most situations regarding games and media.
